Clarence, New York

Those seeking a vibrant but closely-knit community will appreciate what the city of Clarence, New York has to offer. Originally named by Native Americans as the “place of man-to-man relations,” Clarence is known for its blended community, combining suburban commuters with a long-standing history of agriculture and light industry trade. Part of the richness of the town’s culture harkens back through two centuries of history.

As the oldest town in Erie County, the 25,000-plus residents of Clarence celebrate their two-hundred-year anniversary in 2008. The area was settled by a number of famous figures involved in the American Revolution, including officer Asa Harris and Asa Ransom, whose name is prominent throughout many parts of New York State.

Though relatively intimate in its modest size, Clarence enjoys abundant access to major arteries such as Interstate 90 and State Highways 5, 78 and 324. Commuters who work in Amherst or Buffalo will find that the drive to and from those cities is well worth the benefits of home in Clarence.

Although real estate prices are somewhat higher than when properties were first offered by Joseph Ellicott of Holland Land Company for $2 an acre in 1799, you can still get plenty for your money in Clarence. With median incomes significantly above state averages and home prices nearly two-thirds that of state average, you’ll find a community in Clarence where your dollars go much farther.

Tucked in among thatches of towering hickory trees, the natural amenities near Clarence are ideal for outdoor types or even casual naturalists. A number of hiking and bicycle trails were developed in partnership with the neighboring town of Newstead, along with plenty of nature trails in the more forested areas on the outskirts of town. For the less adventurous, Main Street boasts several antique stores for strollers and browsers interested in stretching their legs in town.

For those concerned about educational opportunities for the younger ones, Clarence has both public and private options through high school nearby, as well as seven higher education institutions within twenty-five miles. The public schools in Clarence have consistently high rankings, and with employment opportunities both locally and in neighboring cities, one doesn’t have to travel far form home to make a career in the Clarence area.

Though we hate to name-drop, a number of notable figures have proudly called Clarence home, including B. John Zavrel, founder and director of the US-Museum of European Art, Honorary Consul of the Czech Republic. More locally recognizable names include Lindy Ruff, Teppo Numminen and Martin Biron of the Buffalo Sabres hockey club, along with folk singer Joan Baez and Wilson Greatbatch, inventor of the pacemaker.
